Hand carved from a single block of white marble about 1900, this lovely bust represents "Sappho," or often in French, Sapho, the famous classical poet who lived on the Greek island of Lesbos. Some of her poetry about love survived her death about 570 BC, and led to the modern meaning of "Lesbian."
The signature on this marvelous work of art is difficult to decipher, perhaps, "F. P. Koevu." Exquisitely detailed, this sculpture dates from the Art Nouveau period. Size of this entrancing statue, said to be from Italy or Greece, is 6" across and 14" tall.
