A wonderful George III grandfather or tall case clock from around 1780 is signed, "George Millne, Canongate, Foot." The "Royal Mile" area of the old capital of Scotland in Edinburgh lies between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace, the shop was at the "foot" of the street.
This antique clock has been professionally cleaned and adjusted, the 8 day brass movement strikes the hour on a bell and keeps excellent time. The hand engraved brass dial has opulent detailing with dolphin and head motifs. A calendar dial appears to work, the silent/strike lever does not work, the mechanism is missing.
The hand crafted mahogany case has artistic inlaid marquetry in satinwood, the old finish has warm patina and just enough mars and wear for character. Fluted columns are warped, see photos. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its glowing luster.
The door has old wavy glass, the very bottom has been restored on this historic furniture. There are losses to the edges and to the fretwork in the pediment, see photos.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
Dimensions are 20" wide, 11" deep and 86 1/2" tall.
