Signed "Semeuse," The Seeder, a lovely sculpture depicts a beautiful country girl walking through a furrowed field, planting and scattering seeds. She has a flowing gown, wooden shoes and a scarf and is captured mid-stride. Her expression suggests that her thoughts are elsewhere. The statue has a bronze or deep gold patinated finish on spelter, a pewter-like cast metal alloy.
The signature plate is engraved "Par (by) Geo. Maxim," a noted sculptor of the early 1900's. This artist was famous for works like this in the Art Nouveau style, employing bronze, terra cotta and ceramic, as well as artwork in the later Art Deco style.
There is just enough wear at the edges for a little character, this lovely French work of art stands 25 1/2" tall.
