A tender statue of a courting couple at the wheat harvest dates from about 1900. The statue has a hand-painted bronze finish over composition or "chalk" as it was called in Victorian times.
The barefoot couple is caught in a private moment, they have just dropped their bunches of wheat, he has grasped the young woman's side, and she demurely touches his hand, perhaps uncertain whether to resist or encourage him.
He is in midstride, he has just approached her as she stands, this evocative sculpture tells a story open to interpretation. Exquisitely detailed, there are minor touchups, but we see no significant repairs on this charming work of art.
Size of the oval base is 14" wide, height is 29."
