Signed "Switzerland," this 1890's era music box plays ten tunes as inscribed on a calligraphy card. This musical instrument plays beautifully with resonant silvery ringing tones.
The movement has genuine jewels like a fine watch. The "comb" is undamaged, the spring is wound with a lever at the left. Speed is regulated by a spinning "governor." A small lever starts and stops at the end of a tune, another either repeats or changes the melody.
The case is rosewood and mahogany with inlaid banding and has a fine old finish with warm antique patina. Presented as an engagement gift, this player was custom made to play a fiancee's favorite songs.
Case dimensions are 13 1/2" long, 7" deep and 5" tall. Please click below to hear the box play.
