This wonderful English tall case or grandfather clock dates from the early 1800's, and has a carved oak case with traditional Celtic designs.
The richly engraved dial is signed "Thomas Fletcher of Dewsbury." Above is a charming oil painting of a country cottage under an arch engraved with the motto, "Improve With Time."
Professionally cleaned and oiled, the brass 8 day movement runs very well, and strikes the hour. The case has just enough wear for beautiful old patina, and has various repairs over many years.
Dewsbury is a hamlet in the county of West Riding of Yorkshire on the River Calder, east of Liverpool and north of London. The novelist, Charlotte Bronte, is the most famous resident, and was born about the time this clock was made.
Inside is the label of a Victorian clockmaker who apparently oiled this historic clock. A lovely country antique with beautiful proportions, the artistry in brass and oak is understated yet masterful. Dimensions are 20" wide, 11" deep and 6'11" tall.
