Very charming, this Victorian jewel of a diminutive desk was called a "Davenport" after its Victorian inventor. It is also referred to as a "ship captain's" desk, popular on board because of its compact size.
Hand made of solid mahogany about 1895, mahogany knobs are original. The gold-tooled leather writing surface lifts, to a finished interior with tiny cubicles. A carved gallery lifts to reveal tiny compartments.
On the right side are four drawers, all with beautifully hand-cut dovetails, drawer fronts on the left side are false for the sake of symmetry.
The gleaming finish is superb on all four sides of this picturesque antique furniture. There are minor mars at the edges plus old shrinkage irregularity at the front right corner, see photos.
Dimensions are 21" wide, 20" deep, 31" tall, the leather writing surface slopes up from 26" high at the front.
