A rustic secretary desk with bookcase top was hand crafted of solid oak and ash about 1780 in Holland.
Every surface is hand planed, there are warps, shrinkage separations from age and restorations over the centuries. The old finish has been waxed and buffed, so all that is needed to maintain the warm patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. There are square cut nails on this antique Dutch furniture. Raised panels and pegged joints show the cabinetmaker's expertise.
Clean lines and inlay work appear quite "modern" in design. Two locks do not work and keys are handles only, other locks operate with individual keys. When the drop front is closed, there is a lip for a book rest. Inside are tiny drawers for documents.
Dimensions are 43" wide, 24" deep, 66 1/2" tall and the writing surface is 28" high.
