A lavishly carved "Rococo Revival" version of the "ship captain desk" was signed by famous maker "H.B. Mudge of Cincinnati, Ohio" about 1875.
Desks of this design were also called "Davenports" after their English inventor, Col. Davenport.
Solid walnut with matched flame grain mahogany panels, the restored finish is in excellent condition. The lacy artistry and detail of the filigree hand carving is truly amazing on this American made antique furniture. The desktop has a working lock and key. Under the leather writing surface is a storage area in golden maple with tiny drawers and an original wavy glass mirror. There is a shrinkage separation from age, see photos.
There are four drawers with carved pulls on the right side, left drawer fronts are false for balance. A tiny hinged drawer fits pens and inkwells. All drawers have beautiful tiny hand cut dovetail joints.
Measurements are 23" wide, 26" deep, 41" tall and the desktop slopes upward from 31" high at the front edge.
