This lavish collector's cabinet or "Cabinet of Curiosities or Wonders" from the 1700's is part of a tradition of collector's cabinets that started in the Renaissance. Natural history specimens, minerals, historical or religious relics, miniature paintings and antiquities formed the basis of modern museums.
This historic example with a pull out felted desk and inkwell compartments joins traditional Georgian British design with Chinese hand painted and enameled decoration. Entirely hand made, the case and drawers have hand cut dovetail joinery.
The interior has its original finish, the exterior original painting on a very dark green background has been preserved with clear lacquer. There have been various touchups plus shrinkage separations and warps from age over the centuries on this antique furniture.
The double arched top is graceful. Drawer sides and bottoms are oak. Engraved hardware appears original. Rose cut hand made nails and hand planing marks are visible. The elaborate engraved hinges have restorations, one key operates the door lock and another the drawer locks. The upper section is a separate piece for easier moving.
Measurements are 42" wide, 23" deep and 80" tall.
