A charming little Regency sewing box or jewelry chest from England was hand crafted of pine with embossed brass mounts and tooled leather. Inside is a signed gift card dated "1836."
Inside are silk panels with classical scenes including a charioteer with a cherub, pulled by a ram. Gold tooled leather is in remarkable condition inside, There is a removable smokey mirror and compartments for letters and keepsakes. Leather lids cover compartments with sewing materials, including gilt spools of thread signed "Barber & Clark." There are pincushions, a thimble and several needles. Below is a drawer. The lock and key work on this exquisite antique chest.
The restored finish is in excellent condition, remnants of the leather are cracked and worn, see photos. Brass mounts and side handles appear original, except for one corner piece which is different. Surrounded by oak leaves and acorns, the monogram plate appears never engraved.
Measurements are 10" wide, 9" deep and 8 1/2" tall.
