An Art Nouveau period sculpture is signed "France," and by members of the famed family of sculptors, "H&F Moreau." Louis Auguste (1855-1919) and Hyppolyte Francois Moreau worked together on this work of art from around 1900.
"Amphitrite" is a Greek mythological figure, goddess of the sea and wife of Poseidon. The is depicted with a sea shell in flowing garb, caught in mid stride.
This realistic and naturalistic statue was cast in spelter, a white metal alloy similar to pewter, with original dark bronze and green patination. An engraved brass plate recalls the Moreau's winning a gold medal in Paris art competitions. The wooden base has an original grained red marble finish.
Measurements are 7" across and almost 21" tall.
