A sculpture of a young woman with a laurel wreath, the crown of Olympic victors, is signed by famed French Art Nouveau sculptor, "August Moreau." There is also a French foundry stamp on this modern statue from about 25 years ago.
The Moreau family of sculptors was renowned around the world for their naturalistic and graceful sculpture. Louis Auguste was born in Dijon, France in 1855 and died in 1919. He studied with his father and uncles, also at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. The original of this sculpture dates from around 1900.
The naturalistic pose is beautiful, as she welcomes a victor with the traditional laurel sprig. Cast in alloy metal, the dark bronze finish is in excellent condition on this work of art. The polished base is marble.
Size is 8" diameter and 25" tall.
