This splendid armoire was hand carved of solid wormy oak and chestnut in France about 1780. Every surface is hewn and hand planed. Vine motifs are delicately carved and wooden pegs secure the joints. There are various losses and shrinkage separations from two centuries for antique character, see photos.
Gracefully arched doors have original wrought iron hinges. The old finish is very well preserved, it has been waxed and buffed so that all that is needed to preserve its soft luster is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. A large working lock is about 100 years old but not original.
The interior was lined with oak fitted partitions and adjustable shelves about 25 years ago, there are holes for electronic cables through the back. Feet have restorations as is typical. For easier moving, the crown is a separate piece, but the armoire does not disassemble otherwise.
Measurements are 61" wide at the crown, 57" wide in the body, 27" deep and 7' 9" tall, the interior is 21 1/2" deep.
