This antique bed from Brittany dates from the 1890's and has been adapted to fit modern king size bedding. A pair of pipers in wooden shoes and traditional folk garb are artistically hand-carved in solid chestnut and oak.
A courting scene, another at a stone well and a domestic scene with a baby are artistically sculpted in high relief on the footboard.
Brittany or Bretagne is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.
The deep brown finish is excellent on this spectacular heirloom furniture, which traditionally descended with the daughters of a family as part of their dowry.
Side rails are richly carved as well, and dimensions are 7' wide, 7'4" long, the headboard is 5'6" tall, the footboard is 43" tall.
