Traditional Brittany design is truly inspiring in a back bar cabinet with hand carved figures, scenes and glowing lighthouses that dates from about 1915. Solid chestnut and oak, the incredible three dimensional sculptures are fruitwood, the detailed harbor scene tableau is signed, "Y. Floch." Full figured statues are individual representations.
The center panel slides both directions, opening onto shelves inside. In true perspective, the dramatic scene shows a crowd eagerly awaiting sailing ships. Top and center is the family crest or coat of arms. Below are sculptures of the bridal couple and parents. All figures are individuals, expertly captured by the artist with detailed costumes down to the embroidery. Lamps in the lower light houses have been rewired for American current.
The original finish has been cleaned and waxed, it is in superb condition for its age. Hardware and working locks are original. Drawers are dovetailed, panels are raised - virtuoso workmanship is superior everywhere. This spectacular antique is part of a dowry set custom made for a prosperous seafaring family on the Atlantic coast.

Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress and wooden shoes, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.
Heirloom furniture traditionally descended with the daughters of a family as part of their dowry and served to store her needlework, pewter and silver.
