A queen size Brittany bed has hand carved three dimensional scenes of village life and dates from about 1900. High relief artistry is expertly detailed, and is truly inspiring.
Made of solid chestnut, the finish is excellent, waxed and polished, needing only a wipe with a soft dry cloth to keep its warm antique patina. Virtuoso provincial workmanship is superior everywhere.
Brittany or Bretagne is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions, distinctive dress and wooden shoes, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.
Heirloom furniture traditionally descended with the daughters of a family as part of their dowry. This folk motif bed has been adapted to fit a modern standard queen size mattress as shown. Deeply carved side rails are original, wooden slats to support a spring and mattress are included.
Measurements of this heroic bed are 66" wide, 87" long, the headboard is 64" tall and the footboard is 45" high.
