Brittany folk carving is legendary, shown in this charming square pub, game or dining table with a carved statue supporting each corner. Solid walnut, there are beautiful knots in the well worn table top, notice old shrinkage separations. Solid and rugged, this is a truly charming country antique.
Brittany or Bretagne is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress with wooden shoes, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.
The finish is excellent on this heirloom furniture, which traditionally descended with the daughters of a family, as part of their dowry. Both the spindle galleries and deeply carved skirt are characteristic in this 1890's antique. Size is 46" by 47" by 28 1/2" tall.
