A traditional Chinese carved dowry chest or trunk from about 1920 could also be a coffee table. Deeply carved of camphor, the aromatic wood naturally repels insects, like our cedar. Sculpted dragon and pagoda motifs are richly detailed.
The restored finish is in excellent condition on this antique furniture. Inside is a lift out tray, used for silks, part of a young woman's dowry to move to her new home upon her marriage. The solid brass padlock and key are original.
To use as a coffee or cocktail table, it might be nice to fit a plate glass top.
Size is 35" long, 18" deep and 18 1/2" tall.
