Dutch Baroque Marquetry 1700's Long Case Grandfather Clock, Straatman, Hague

A magnificent Dutch Baroque tall case or grandfather clock with lavish marquetry from around 1700 was signed, "Cornelius Straatman, S' Hage," an early spelling of The Hague, the famous port city in Holland.

There are numerous losses, shrinkage separations and restorations over the centuries, all preserved with an excellent clear finish. Walnut burl is inlaid with satinwood marquetry on the "bombe" antique case. The brass filigree dial is richly engraved, there is a "strike or silent" lever.

The hand made brass movement has been professionally cleaned and oiled and keeps excellent time. There is a bell strike on the hour and this historic timepiece runs a week on a winding.

Measurements are 26" wide, 7' 11 1/2" tall and 12 1/2" deep.

This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
