The Rolls Royce of clocks, this tall case or grandfather clock is signed by premier English maker, "Elliott of London." This historic 4 tube chime movement was hand made in England around 1900, shipped to America and signed on the back and sold by "Herschede."
The wonderfully machined and signed brass movement keeps excellent time. Every quarter hour, the strike has warm and musical resonance, playing the familiar Westminster melody on four tuned chime tubes, also counting the hour. Levers select "silent/strike" and "chime/silent" on the dial, which has not been polished.
The solid mahogany case is American made, the deep satiny finish has been renewed and in in excellent condition.
Deep moldings and bun feet are imposing. Lower panes of glass are beveled. To hang the chime tubes, the back panel is removable. Locks and keys work.
James Jones Elliott was apprenticed in 1865, he went into business for himself at 156 Cheapside, London and patented the original weight driven tubular chime movement that was widely copied by others.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
Dimensions of this brilliant antique clock are 29" wide, 18" deep and 7' 8" tall to the tip of the arch.
