This beautiful desk was built entirely by hand with matched flame grain mahogany, visible hand dove tails, and hand cut square nails.
Behind the drop front there are three birdseye maple drawers, the center one opens and unlocks a panel covering a secret compartment and drawer inside. There are wonderful large dove tails right and left. The three lower drawers are graduated and are hand dove tailed, hand chamfered, and the back is paneled and secured with hand-cut square nails.
This desk was constructed in the 1830's in the Eastern United States. There are several shrinkage cracks due to age - see photos. The drawers work smoothly, everything is solid and sturdy, and the finish is in excellent condition in a deep red mahogany color.
It is 4' tall, 33" wide, and 22" deep. The writing surface is supported by wooden pull out arms, and is 36" above the floor. The integrity and beauty of this piece is remarkable, this Empire desk shows late Sheraton influence, dating from about 1835.
