This mahogany "butler's" secretary desk and bookcase from about 1870 looks like it just came from Downton Abbey. A butler was the manager of a great estate, this clean lined desk allowed him to organize the staff and pay bills.
The restored finish is in excellent condition, enhancing inlaid banding of satinwood and rosewood. There are shrinkage separations from age for a little antique character. In the upper doors are old wavy glass panes and a working lock, interior shelves have an ingenious adjustment by sliding into grooves.
The pull out and drop front desk top is at stool or standing height of 33." Inside are a new leather writing surface plus cubicles and tiny drawers with satinwood fronts and solid oak sides with beautiful tiny dovetail joints.
Lower oak sided drawers and the outer case also have hand cut dovetail joints, brass pulls are original. The upper section is removable for easier delivery. Hand cut nails were used to attach the rough sawn back.
Dimensions are 41" wide, 23" deep, 92 1/2" tall and the base cabinet is 43 1/2" tall.
