Hand made in the 1790's, this tall case grandfather clock is signed "Joseph Smallwood, Sandbach" England. Professionally cleaned, oiled and adjusted, the 8 day brass movement keeps accurate time, striking a silvery bell on the hour. The second hand operates, even the calendar dial appears to work.
The well proportioned case has a very fine finish and beautiful patina on oak with matched burl panels and mahogany banding. Hand engraved, the dial has exquisite detailing and hand-painted numerals. Glass in the door is old and wavy. There is remarkably delicate grillwork over fabric covering pierced holes in the case underneath for the bell to sound. Pendulum and weights appear original.
The market town of Sandbach (pronounced "sand-batch") has around 18,000 inhabitants today, and lies in Cheshire, just south of Manchester in northwest England. We could find no biographical information about Joseph Smallwood, but a similar tall case clock also signed by this expert clockmaker and dated 1800 was at the Dorotheum in Vienna in 2007.
Measurements of this historic antique clock are 24" wide, 12" deep and 7 1/2' tall.
