One of the most famous sculptures of the Renaissance, the god "Mercury" by Giambologna is represented in this bronze statue from about 1900.
The "Messenger of the Gods" is shown in movement, wings on his feet. Born in Flanders, Giambologna (1529-1608) achieved his greatest fame in Rome working for Popes and in Florence, working for the Medicis. He sculpted four versions of Mercury, poised on one foot and supported by a zephyr. One arm points heavenward.
The black marble base has a bronze frieze panel with cupids or angels on this work of art. This work of art from Europe is in very fine condition with a warm chocolate brown patina. There is a little play in the arms, the individual castings have original bronze pins that would be difficult to tighten, but the arms are secure.
Height is 35" and the base is just over 7" diameter.
