This wonderful golden maple Georgian or Federal period secretary desk was made in New England about 1790. Entirely hand-made by a very skilled country cabinetmaker, the old finish is in very fine condition. Drawers have hand-cut dovetails, chamfered bottoms, everything is hand planed and the joinery is exposed on the top and sides.
Inside are small compartments, drawers in tiger maple, and a center door with an incised shell. The hand made brasses could be original, it is impossible to be certain, there are extra holes in the drawerfronts and the dropfront as well, presumably from hardware not of the period. There is charming authentic wear, and the patina is exceptionally warm.
As usual in antique period furniture, there are various restorations, especially to the drawer sides, feet, and back that mostly appear about a century old. Some glue blocks are new. Beautiful Yankee furniture, measurements are 39" wide, 42" tall, 20" deep and the writing surface is 31 1/2" above the floor.
