A clock work wind up "spit jack" was also called a turnspit or fireplace jack, a rotisserie device used to keep a roast or bird turning in a fireplace to cook evenly.
Signed "Salter's," this antique from England dates from the mid 1800's. The original brass key winds up the spring mechanism, which has been professionally cleaned and oiled and works well.
Turning a few revolutions in one direction, it then reverses for even cooking. The 6 1/2" diameter iron wheel has adjustable rings to attach several items to roast.
The brass "bottle" shaped motor measures 4 1/2" across and 12" tall, overall height is 16."
