This stand up or stool height "Paymaster's" desk was where wages were picked up in cash, it would be great fun as a ticket counter for a home theater. Hand carved of solid oak and chestnut about 1860, there is a brass gallery and inlaid tray for coins. The cash drawer automatically locks whenever closed, and can only be opened with the key.
Inside are cubicles for ledgers, the footrest is well worn. Joints are secured by carved wooden pegs, panels are raised. Drawer interiors and tracks were rebuilt, presumably because they were heavily worn.
The old finish is very fine on all four sides, it has been waxed and hand rubbed, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its patina. There is lots of antique character - stains, wear and losses, see photos.
Crafted in northern France, this picturesque desk is rugged country furniture. Measurements are 37" wide, 29" deep, 46" tall and the desktop is 42" high.
