A carved pine chalet, typical of the Tyrolean area in the Swiss Alps, hides a jewel chest and music box. Purchased in Switzerland as a souvenir in the 1890's, it plays a sweet Victorian tune when the "roof" lid is raised. Underneath is a locking jewelry compartment, lined in old velvet.
The box itself has losses, wear and lots of antique patina and character, see photos. The script label on the bottom is difficult to decipher.
Traditionally, farmers in the mountains carved pieces like this to earn extra money during the long and isolated winter months.
Measurements of this nostalgic music box are 10" wide, 6" deep and 7" tall.
