Very charming, this Victorian jewel of a diminutive desk was called a "Davenport" after its Victorian English inventor. It is also referred to as a "ship captain's" desk, popular on board because of its compact size.
Hand made of solid walnut with burl panels about 1870, pulls are original brass and ebony. The old leather writing surface lifts to a finished interior, fitted with tiny compartments and drawers in golden maple, the lock is missing. A carved gallery supports books on the top.
On the right side are four drawers, all with beautifully hand-cut dovetails. A tiny pencil drawer has inkwell compartments.
The gleaming satiny finish is superb on all four sides of this picturesque antique American furniture.
Dimensions are 23" wide, 24" deep, and 37" tall, the leather writing surface slopes up from 29 1/2" high at the front to 32" tall.
