Hand crafted around 1860 in the Biedermeier or Empire design, this marble top secretary desk was made in Austria.
Matched flame grain mahogany has an excellent satiny finish. There are minor shrinkage separations from age and waviness in some panels, see photos. Locks work with a key, the drop front has a double throw lock and is supported by iron bars.
The writing surface is old gold tooled leather. Inside are shaped columns with bronze mounts. Tiny drawers plus the large lower ones all have solid oak sides with hand cut dovetail joints. The top under the marble also shows dovetail joinery, the back is paneled with wooden pegs. Polished and sealed to resist stains, the marble top is richly figured on this
European antique furniture. Tapered solid mahogany columns are rebuilt.
Measurements are 38 1/2" wide, 18" deep and 55 1/2" tall, the desktop is 28 1/2" high.
