A Georgian long case or grandfather clock is signed "Thomas Pringle of Dalkeith," Scotland, where he worked from 1830-1836.
The hand made brass movement has been professionally serviced and oiled, it keeps excellent time for a week on a winding. There is a bell strike that counts the hour.
Iron weights and brass pendulum appear original, the winding crank is a replacement. The original hand painted iron dial has remarkably little wear, the country scene depicts a young woman with a bird and sheep. Numerals on the calendar and second hand dials are repainted. The back of the iron dial plate is signed "Wright, Birm." for Birmingham.
A traditional mahogany case has flame grain panels and genuine rosewood accents, there are various restorations over the years and the glass door has a small warp from age. The restored finish is in excellent condition with warm patina, preserving minor mars and uneven spots for a little antique character. The door lock works, brass mounts on the pediment are original.
Dalkeith is an ancient small town with a 12th Century castle just south of Edinburgh, Scotland. Pringle, whose shop was on the High (Main) street, died in 1836.
Measurements are 20" wide, 10" deep and 82" tall.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
