A splendid Georgian period tall case or grandfather clock with a mahogany case from about 1825 is in excellent running order, hand crafted in Scotland. The signature is visible on the dial only with a black light, and reads "J. As. Picken of Edinburgh."
The original brass movement has been professionally cleaned and oiled and keeps accurate time for a week on a winding. A bell strike counts the hours. The hand painted dial appears original, accented with gold leaf. The maker's name or town are sadly worn away on this antique furniture. Engraved brass hands, the iron winding crank, brass pendulum and cast iron weights also seem to be original.
The case has a very fine renewed finish with warm patina on banded mahogany with flame grain panels, preserving various restorations and shrinkage separations from age, see photos.
John Picken was apprenticed in 1794, and worked on his own in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland from 1822-1850.
Size is 22" wide, 12" deep and 7' 6" tall.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
