This traditional Georgian block front secretary desk and bookcase was used by the President of Milwaukee Downer College, Lucia Briggs, who served 1921-1951. Her father was a Dean at Harvard, and later President of Radcliffe. The College later merged with Lawrence University of Appleton, WI.
One of the photos has a portrait of her at the desk with a picture of her father in the background.
Solid mahogany, the desk dates from about 1920 and is signed "Colonial." Raised panel arched doors open to a bookcase with adjustable shelves, above are flame shaped finials. Feet are authentic claw and ball design.
The restored deep finish is in excellent condition on this antique American made furniture.
The drop front rests on "automatic" supports and covers tiny drawers and cubicles with secret compartments. Drawers have dovetail joints and original brass hardware. A key operates all locks. The bookcase is a separate piece for easier delivery.
Measurements are 42" wide tip to tip, 22" deep, 87" tall and the desktop is 30" high.
