This large "dome top" immigrant trunk from Scandinavia with folk art painting is dated "1823" and monogrammed "FPD." The heart motif on the interior ironwork suggests this was a dowry chest.
Hand hewn of pine, corners have hand cut dovetail joints and carved wooden pegs on this European furniture, useful as a blanket chest. Wrought iron hardware and the giant working lock and key are original. Inside is a small covered compartment for valuables.
There is wear to the traditional hand painting, akin to the famous rose maling. There are mars and dings for antique character, and this picturesque piece has been waxed and buffed, so all that is needed to preserve its warm patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth.
Measurements are 46" long, 23" deep and 26" tall.
