Remarkable Brittany folk craftsmanship distinguishes this hand-carved solid chestnut desk with a gallery dates from the 1890's. Deeply carved panels depict a wedding celebration and dancing. Brittany or Bretagne is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken.
Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.
The medium brown original finish is excellent on this spectacular heirloom furniture, which traditionally descended with the daughters of a family as part of their dowry. Behind the carved doors are shelves and a hand dovetailed drawer, bun feet support the desk. The gallery section is removable.
Notice various shrinkage separations, warps, mars and losses, the character and patina are nostalgic on this charming antique. Measurements are 4'6" wide, 28" deep, 5'1" tall, the desktop is 30" above the floor.
