Butler Secretary Desk, Mahogany 1840 Antique Secret Compartments, England
This style of English secretary desk from about 1840 was often called a "butler's" desk, used by the butler who managed an estate, hired and fired staff and kept the books, Downton Abbey style.
This mahogany example has flame grain panels with inlaid oval medallions. The restored finish is in excellent condition, preserving just enough mars and dings plus shrinkage separations from age for a little antique character.
Push buttons release the drop front of the pull out desk. Inside are drawers and cubicles for papers plus two "secret" compartments. All drawers have beautiful tiny hand cut dovetail joints. The writing surface is new natural saddle leather.
Original knobs are mahogany inlaid with ebony and satinwood stars on this country manor house furniture.
Measurements are 47" wide, 23" deep, 41 1/2" tall and the desktop is 30" high.
