Hand crafted of solid cherry about 1790 in New England, this secretary desk is a classic. The finish is very well preserved with warm antique patina, waxed and buffed, it needs only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth to maintain its luster.
Graduated drawers have original chamfered bottoms and hand cut dovetails. Brasses are old but not original on this authentic Federal period furniture.
On the top, hand cut dovetail joinery is visible. Drawer dividers are mortised into the side planks of cherry. The hand planed back still has some rose cut hand made nails. Feet have been rebuilt many years ago, and there are restorations around the hinges and above the lid. The key is a handle only, the drop front lock does not work. Inside are tiny hand made drawers and cubicles for papers.
Clean lines are beautiful on this charming example of our American heritage. Size is 37" wide, 20" deep, 39" tall and the writing surface is 30" high.
