During the 16th and 17th centuries, "cabinets of curiosities" and "wonder rooms" grew in popularity across Europe. Collectors, usually the aristocracy, had whole rooms dedicated to antique artifacts and scientific marvels. But, as the middle class emerged, these large collections were condensed, creating the need for small, see-through cabinets.
