This lovely "birdcage" solid mahogany tea table appears to be an authentic 18th Century Georgian Chippendale base with a replaced top that dates from about 100 years ago.
The graceful ball and claw base shows appropriate hand-carving and wear for the 1770-1780 period. On the bottom of the pedestal, hand-cut dovetail joints are visible, and the reinforcing "spider" is wrought iron.
Often the tilt top on these tables was "cupped" or warped, and eventually replaced, as we presume happened with this historic furniture. The top has hand-carved "pie crust" edging, showing authentic craftsmanship hand-chiseled by a master cabinetmaker.
The 29" wide single plank of beautifully grained mahogany was joined with a 3" wide board on one side to make the full diameter of 32" across.
Beautifully proportioned English or American furniture, the later finish is in excellent condition. This historic antique is 30" tall.
