A superlative New England cherry secretary desk in Georgian or Hepplewhite style dates from about 1790. This historic furniture has wonderful warm patina and various repairs, age shrinkage separations and mars.
The old polished finish is very fine with exceptional natural cherry color. Embossed brasses appear original. Fine hand-cut dovetail joinery is visible on the drawers and case, nails are hand-wrought.
The drop-front writing surface rests on pull-out supports. Inside are tiny cubicles and drawers, a locking door gives access to tabs that open two "secret" drawers. The top left drawer inside bears a bequest inscription dated 1929, see photo.
Around the edges are delicate inlaid bands or "stringing" in contrasting walnut and maple.
For its age, this antique is exceptionally sound and usable. Dimensions of this wonderful antique are 42" wide, 21" deep, 43" tall and the desk surface is 32" high.
