This spectacular New England country secretary desk dates to about 1760. It is entirely hand-made of solid curly and tiger grain birch hardwood. The small drawers have wooden pegs, hand-cut dovetails and square hand-wrought nails with faceted heads.
Patina is beautiful, the glowing and shimmering golden finish is wonderful. The drop front rests on pull-out supports, there are pegs and small shrinkage separations, see photos. Inside are original cubicles and tiny drawers.
Lower graduated drawers are hand-dovetailed with chamfered butternut wood bottoms. All surfaces are hand-planed, sides are cut from single planks and dovetails are visible where they join the top at the corners.
Feet were rebuilt long ago, brass hardware is also old but not original. Back boards are original with later screws, one board is replaced.
Honest and straightforward Yankee antique furniture, this is a real beauty. Measurements are 38" wide, 19" deep, 41" tall and the writing surface is 30" high.
