Victorian Renaissance Secretary Desk, Bookcase

A classic Victorian Renaissance secretary desk, sometimes called a "butler's desk," was hand-made during the Civil War era, about 1865. Carved of solid walnut with burl panels, the warm deep finish is superb with wonderful patina - mostly original and with very little wear for its age.
The upper bookcase section has adjustable shelves and original wavy glass, it is separate for handling. Above the leather drop down writing surface are small drawers, one with pen and inkwell compartments. Drawers are hand dovetailed.
Characteristic incised carving shows the early beginnings of Eastlake design on this American antique. Deep moldings lend an architectural feeling to this imposing furniture, which measures 4'3" wide, 21" deep, 7' 10 1/2" tall and the writing surface is 29 1/2" high.
