A beautiful example of traditional Florentine "Pietra Dure" (also Dura) or hard stone mosaic is this scene with birds. Inlaid semi-precious stones include lapis lazuli and malachite set into a black marble panel. Said to have been from around 1910 and acquired at the famous shop "Arte Musiva" or Art of Mosaic in Florence, Italy, the artistry is gorgeous.
This Renaissance form of art is identified with Florence, home of the Medici family workshops, now the museum "Opificio della Pietra Dure." The black marble slab is 17 1/2" square and 5/8" thick. The classical frame was custom fitted in Chicago a few years ago, and overall size is 23" square and 2" deep.
