An authentic "Cassone," a marriage chest or dowry trunk dated "Anno 1747" would have been the most prized possession in an Italian home. Hand hewn of solid oak, the giant wrought iron open lock and key are original. This chest would hold a young woman's linens, pewter and silver dowry, to be moved to her new home upon her marriage.
The old finish has been waxed and buffed, preserving lots of stains, losses and shrinkage separations from age. Waxed and buffed, all that is needed to maintain the warm antique patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth.
Hand wrought iron nails and hardware are original, there are old restorations to the back and bottom, see photos.
Measurements are 58" long, 21" deep and 28 1/2" tall.
