A spectacular dowry trunk or blanket chest from about 1760 has inlaid marquetry with bird designs in walnut, oak and maple plus exotic species. Hand wrought iron handles and hardware are original, the giant open lock is remarkable and still works. The interior is pine, there are wood pegs and hand made nails.
The glossy finish is old but not original and is in very fine condition on this wonderful antique furniture. There are mars, stains and losses over the centuries, see photos.
Corners have hand cut dovetail joints. There is a lift lid compartment inside for valuables. In the base are two "secret" drawers. Construction style suggests that this historic chest was crafted in America by very skilled cabinetmakers who had apprenticed in the European tradition.
