A Baroque period statue of St. John the Evangelist was hand carved in Europe in the mid 1600's. The original gesso and hand painting have significant wear and losses, plus there are losses to the fingers and a toe, see photos.
The dramatic pose and flamboyant draping are dramatic on this sculpture, a traditional depiction of St. John. There is a hole in the base for his staff, now lost. Hand chiseled of fine grain wood, there are shrinkage separations from age on the back side as shown. Small holes at the top of the head presumably once supported a halo, and there is a mounting hole on the back side.
Unfortunately, nothing is known about the history of this religious work of art, and artists of the era were usually anonymous.
Overall size is 14" across, 8" deep and 25" tall.
