Coast of Brittany With Sailboat Oil Painting, Charles H Kellner 1935 #33319

An original oil painting of the coast of Brittany in France with a sailboat is signed "Charles H Kellner 1935." The rugged Atlantic coast is powerfully depicted on canvas by this noted artist.

Kellner was born in Czechoslovakia in 1890, and immigrated to New York in 1907. After studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, he enlisted in the US Army in World War I. After studying in Europe, he returned to Chicago, where he exhibited at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair and married a concert pianist. His landscapes of the British and French coast like this made his reputation.

The understated but rich frame is modern on this wonderful work of art.

This picture is a deaccession from the A. Christine Schwartz Private Collection of Paintings by 19th and 20th Century Chicago Artists. A brief biography by Wendy Greenhouse, Ph. D. is included.

Measurements are 44" wide, by 34" tall, and 2 1/2" deep.
