This style of desk used standing or with a stool was called a "Butler's" desk, in a large estate the butler paid bills and managed affairs from a desk like this. Hand crafted around 1840 of cherry and flame grain mahogany, the satiny finish is in excellent condition.
There have been various restorations over the years, see photo. The pull out desk is inlaid with saddle leather. Tiny compartments and drawers inside hold papers. Drawers have hand cut dovetail joints and chamfered bottoms. Square cut nails are visible on this American made antique furniture.
