Picturesque hand-crafted country furniture, this secretary desk with bookcase top from Pennsylvania has great charm. Dating from the late Empire period about 1840, the wavy glass has bubbles and smoke and appears original.
The glowing finish has wonderful patina on solid walnut, there is loads of character - old India ink stains, mars and wear. There is an unusual flip open front, then the panel behind opens, revealing tiny compartments for letters and notes. The drop front rests on push-out supports. Next to the hidden compartment in the center are removable trays for pens and inkwells.
The upper bookcase section lifts off for easier moving, interior shelves adjust on wooden pegs. Locks are working on this nostalgic one-of-a-kind American antique. Dimensions are 4' 2" wide, 21" deep, just over 7' 10" tall and the writing surface is 30 1/2" high.
